SE Ranking vs Keyword Tool (2027): All-in-One SEO Platform or Keyword Research Tool? Prices, Free Options, Data and Features Compared for Startups

SE Ranking vs Keyword Tool: All-in-One SEO Platform or Keyword Research Tool for Your Startup?

SE Ranking and Keyword Tool both help you find the words your customers type into search, but they are very different products. SE Ranking is an all-in-one SEO platform: keyword research, daily rank tracking, a website audit, backlink and competitor research, and AI search visibility, all in one subscription. Keyword Tool (keywordtool.io) does one job: it mines autocomplete on 17 platforms, from Google and YouTube to Amazon and TikTok, for long-tail keyword ideas, and its Pro plans add search volume, cost per click and an API. We checked both tools' official pricing and feature pages on 1 November 2026: plans and prices as each page shows them by default, free options, data sources and what each one cannot do.
Quick answer: if you only need keyword ideas, especially for YouTube, Amazon, Etsy or TikTok, start with Keyword Tool: the free version gives 750+ ideas per search without an account, and Pro starts at $68 a month billed annually. Choose SE Ranking when you also need to track rankings, audit your site and watch competitors: Core costs €87.20 a month billed annually, includes 2,000 keywords tracked daily, and you can try it free for 14 days without a credit card.

SE Ranking and Keyword Tool in 2027: What Each One Offers

SE Ranking: one subscription for research, tracking, audits and AI visibility

SE Ranking is an SEO platform used by agencies, in-house teams and small businesses. Its keyword research tool gives search volume, keyword difficulty, CPC, search intent and SERP data across 188 locations, with similar, related, long-tail and question suggestions and historical SERP data back to 2020. Its rank tracker checks the top 100 results every day on Google, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube, on desktop and mobile, and also shows how your site appears in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini. According to SE Ranking's data page, its database holds more than 5 billion keywords and 2.2 billion domain profiles, and each keyword's volume is calculated on its own rather than grouped with close variants.

Keyword Tool: long-tail ideas from autocomplete on 17 platforms

Keyword Tool builds keyword lists from autocomplete: it adds letters and numbers before and after your seed keyword and collects what each platform suggests. That finds the long, specific phrases an early-stage startup can actually rank for. The free version works without an account, gives up to 750+ ideas per search from Google Autocomplete across 190+ Google domains and 120+ languages, and may show search volume for some keywords.

Keyword Tool: keyword research from autocomplete on 17 platforms
  • 17 platforms: Google, YouTube, Bing, Copilot, Perplexity, Amazon, eBay, the App Store, Google Play, Instagram, X, Reddit, Pinterest, Etsy, TikTok, Naver and Google Trends.
  • Where the numbers come from: Google and Bing volumes come from Google Keyword Planner and Bing Keyword Planner; volumes for the other platforms are estimates based on clickstream data.
  • Pro data: search volume, CPC, competition, trends and device breakdown, about 1,000 keyword ideas per request, and bulk search volume for up to 1,000 keywords you paste in. Google covers 190+ countries, 68,000+ locations and 50+ languages.
  • Plans on the default annual view: Starter $68 a month (50 requests a day, 12 months of history), Growth $148 (100 requests, 24 months), Scale $308 (200 requests, 48 months) and Agency $628 (400 requests, 48 months).
  • API and MCP on every plan: the web interface, API and MCP share one daily request pool, so you can pull keyword data into ChatGPT, Claude or your own tools.
  • No free trial: instead, the Keyword Tool Pro page offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, and you can cancel any time.
  • What it does not do: no rank tracking, no site audit and no backlink data. It is a research tool only.

Price: What a Year Costs

On the default annual view, Keyword Tool Starter costs $68 a month and SE Ranking Core €87.20 a month. By our own calculation that is $816 a year for Keyword Tool Starter and €1,046.40 a year for SE Ranking Core. The two prices are close, but they buy different things: Keyword Tool's money goes into keyword data across 17 platforms, while SE Ranking's covers research plus daily tracking of 2,000 keywords, a site audit, backlink research and AI visibility. If you would otherwise pay for a separate rank tracker and site auditor, SE Ranking is the cheaper setup. If you only need keyword ideas, Keyword Tool's free version may be all you need for months.

SE Ranking vs Keyword Tool: Feature by Feature

Keyword research

Both give long-tail ideas, but from different sources. Keyword Tool takes them from autocomplete, which surfaces fresh, very specific phrases and questions on many platforms. SE Ranking takes them from its own Google database in 188 locations and adds keyword difficulty, intent and the current SERP for every term, which helps you decide which keywords you can win. For research on Google only, both work; for YouTube, Amazon or TikTok, only Keyword Tool helps.

Rank tracking, audits and competitors

This is where SE Ranking pulls ahead: daily rankings in the top 100 on Google, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube, competitor research, backlink research and a website audit of up to 250,000 pages a month on Core. Keyword Tool has none of these, so a startup using it will still need Google Search Console or a rank tracker to see whether its pages rank.

AI search

SE Ranking tracks how your brand appears in AI answers: 25 prompts a day on Core and Growth across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini. Keyword Tool does not track visibility, but it collects autocomplete ideas from Copilot and Perplexity, which helps you see how people phrase questions to AI search.

API, MCP and AI assistants

Both connect to AI assistants. Keyword Tool includes its API and MCP server in every plan, with one shared daily quota. SE Ranking's MCP runs on your plan's API credits (25K a month on Core, 100K on Growth), and a separate API add-on is available for heavy use.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Comparison

  • SE Ranking's price was wrong. The 2026 version said plans start at $65 a month. Today's pricing page shows Core at €87.20 a month billed annually (€109 crossed out), with a 14-day free trial.
  • Keyword Tool has no free trial. Its Pro plans start at $68 a month billed annually and come with a 30-day money-back guarantee instead; the free version still gives 750+ ideas per search.
  • Both tools now cover AI search. SE Ranking tracks AI answers in five AI engines and offers MCP; Keyword Tool's 17 platforms include Copilot and Perplexity, and every plan includes MCP.
  • Removed: statistics with no source ("93% of online experiences begin with a search engine", "150% more leads", "72% of businesses"), customer-service and voice-search answers based on third-party blog posts, and generic "common mistakes" and "future of SEO" sections.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • You have no budget yet: Keyword Tool's free version for ideas, SE Ranking's free daily checks for a quick look at volume and rankings, and Google Search Console for your own data.
  • You mainly need content ideas: Keyword Tool. Autocomplete gives you hundreds of real questions and phrases per seed keyword.
  • You sell on Amazon, Etsy, YouTube or app stores: Keyword Tool, because SE Ranking's keyword data is built for Google search.
  • You publish every week and want to track results: SE Ranking. Research, daily rank tracking and audits in one place save you from buying three tools.
  • You care about ChatGPT and AI Overviews: SE Ranking, for AI visibility tracking across five AI engines.
  • You build automations: both have APIs and MCP; Keyword Tool includes them on every plan, SE Ranking on its API credits.

How Founders Use SE Ranking, Keyword Tool and Other SEO Tools

From keyword ideas to rankings in 5 steps: collect customer words, expand with autocomplete, check volume and difficulty, publish one page per intent, track and fix
From keyword ideas to rankings in five steps.
  1. Collect your customers' words. Write down how people describe the problem in interviews, reviews and forums. These are your seed keywords.
  2. Expand them with autocomplete. Run each seed through Keyword Tool on the platforms your customers use; our guide to finding long-tail keywords shows more ways.
  3. Check volume and difficulty. Put the best ideas into SE Ranking or Keyword Tool Pro, and drop the terms that are too hard to win. Our guide to checking competitor keywords helps here.
  4. Publish one page per search intent. Group close variants and answer each group with one clear page.
  5. Track and fix. Track the target keywords in SE Ranking (or a free rank tracker), run the audit, and improve the pages that slip.
If nobody searches for the problem you solve, that is a signal to validate your startup idea before you build. For more free options, see our roundup of free keyword planner tools, and our new comparisons of Wincher vs Keyword Insights and Wincher vs Google Keyword Planner.
