Screaming Frog vs Wincher (2027): Site Crawler or Rank Tracker, Prices, Free Limits and Which One a Startup Needs First

Screaming Frog vs Wincher: Site Crawler or Rank Tracker, Which Does a Startup Need?

Screaming Frog and Wincher are often put side by side as "SEO tools", but they do two different jobs. Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a website crawler: it visits every page of your site the way Google's bot does and lists what is broken, from 404 errors and redirect chains to missing titles and pages blocked from Google. Wincher is a rank tracker: it checks every day where your pages rank on Google for the keywords you choose and how your competitors move. One tells you whether Google can read your site; the other tells you whether that work is paying off. We checked both tools' product and pricing pages in October 2026.
Quick answer: before or right after launch, start with the free Screaming Frog SEO Spider: it crawls up to 500 URLs with no sign-up, which covers most startup websites, and a licence costs £199 a year (€245) if you outgrow it. Add Wincher once you have pages that rank and want daily Google positions for 500 or more keywords: Basic costs €49 a month on monthly billing, with a 7-day free trial. Most growing sites end up using both, because they do not overlap.

What Each Tool Does in 2027

Screaming Frog SEO Spider: a technical crawl of your whole site

The Screaming Frog SEO Spider comes from Screaming Frog, a UK search marketing agency. It is a desktop program for Windows, macOS and Linux that crawls your website and audits it for more than 300 SEO issues, warnings and opportunities. Each issue comes with a priority and an explanation, and every table exports to a spreadsheet, so you can hand a clean list of fixes to a developer.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider: crawl 500 URLs for free
  • Free version: download it and crawl up to 500 URLs per crawl, with no sign-up or email. It finds broken links, errors and redirects, checks page titles, meta descriptions, meta robots and hreflang, finds exact duplicate pages, generates XML sitemaps and draws site visualisations.
  • What needs a licence: crawl configuration, saving and reopening crawls, JavaScript rendering, scheduling, crawl comparison, near-duplicate content, structured data, spelling and grammar checks, custom extraction, the Google Analytics, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights integrations, the AI integrations and technical support.
  • Price: £199 per licence per year on the pricing page in its default pound view, which is €245 or $279 in its euro and dollar views. Licences are per user and last one year; 5 to 9 licences cost £189 each, 10 to 19 £179 and 20 or more £169.
  • Crawl size: a licence has no fixed URL cap; Screaming Frog says the limit depends on your computer's memory and storage.

AI and MCP: the release history shows direct OpenAI, Gemini and Ollama integration since version 21.0 (November 2024), so you can run a prompt on every crawled page, for example to draft missing meta descriptions or image alt text. Version 22.0 (June 2025) added semantic similarity and content clusters, and version 24.0 (19 May 2026) added the SEO Spider MCP, which lets you run and analyse crawls from AI assistants such as Claude. These are paid licence features, and you pay your AI provider for the tokens. The latest release when we checked was 24.3, from 29 June 2026.
Best for: founders before launch, after a redesign or a domain move, and whenever Search Console shows pages dropping out of Google. Expect a dense, table-based interface.

Wincher: daily Google rankings for the keywords you care about

Wincher is a Stockholm-based rank tracker that now calls itself a search visibility platform. Its rank tracker updates your Google positions every day, sends daily snapshots of the search results, tracks desktop and mobile in different locations and languages, and shows position history, competitors' rankings, the page that ranks for each keyword, estimated traffic and volume history. You can import ranking history from another tool, and Wincher says it keeps your data for 24 months.

Wincher: rank tracker, keyword research, on-page checker and local tracker
  • Basic, €49 a month: from 500 keywords, up to 10 websites, 1 user, 5 tracked competitors per website and 50 related keywords per Keyword Explorer search.
  • Standard, €89 a month: from 1,000 keywords, unlimited websites, multiple users, on-demand ranking updates, 10 competitors per website, keyword gap, API access, Google Looker Studio and white-label reports.
  • Professional, €319 a month: from 5,000 keywords, 20 competitors per website and a key account manager. Plans scale up to 50,000 keywords; above that Wincher gives a tailored quote.
  • Included in every plan: daily updates, Google Search Console integration, scheduled PDF reports, the On-Page SEO checker, AI Content Outliner, AI keyword suggestions and a weekly local rank tracker for Google Maps with 25 credits (extra credits €10 per 500).
  • Trial and refunds: a 7-day free trial, a 7-day refund on your first purchase, and no public free plan. The prices above are the monthly billing shown by default on Wincher's pricing page; yearly billing is also offered.

It does some keyword research too. Wincher's Keyword Explorer is included in every plan with unlimited daily lookups, related keywords, a daily SERP preview and AI keyword suggestions, and keywords you find go straight into the tracker. Its On-Page SEO checker scores a single page against a keyword. Neither replaces a crawl: Wincher does not walk your whole site looking for broken links, redirects or noindex tags.
Best for: founders and small teams with pages that already rank, who want to see every morning whether a launch, a rewrite or a Google update moved them.

Screaming Frog or Wincher: Which Should You Choose?

  • Before launch, after a redesign or a domain move: Screaming Frog. Technical problems can keep pages out of Google, and no amount of rank tracking will show you why. The free version is enough for a site under 500 URLs.
  • Pages ranking on Google pages 1 to 3: add Wincher. Daily positions show within a day which page slipped after an update or a competitor's new article.
  • No budget yet: Screaming Frog free plus Google Search Console, which shows average positions for free. Wincher's free On-Page SEO Checker and SERP Volatility tools need no plan.
  • Your site is built with JavaScript (React, Vue or a no-code builder): you need a Screaming Frog licence for JavaScript rendering, or a crawler that renders on every plan; see Screaming Frog vs Sitebulb.
  • You publish every week: use both. Crawl after big changes, track rankings every day.
  • You want one paid tool that does a bit of everything: an all-in-one suite with a site audit and a rank tracker; see Ahrefs vs Semrush and Ahrefs vs Wincher.
Fix the site, then track it, in 5 steps: crawl the site, fix what blocks Google, submit the sitemap, track your keywords, re-crawl after changes
Fix the site, then track it: a simple routine with Screaming Frog and Wincher.
  1. Crawl the site. Run Screaming Frog on your domain; under 500 URLs the free version covers it.
  2. Fix what blocks Google. Start with 404s, redirect chains, pages marked noindex by mistake and missing or duplicate titles.
  3. Submit the sitemap. Export an XML sitemap from Screaming Frog (or your CMS) and add it in Google Search Console.
  4. Track your keywords. Add 20 to 50 keywords your customers type, plus two or three competitors, to Wincher.
  5. Re-crawl after changes. When a page drops in Wincher, crawl again to rule out a technical cause before you rewrite it.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Comparison

  • Neither is a keyword research tool first. The old title called both "keyword research" tools. Screaming Frog is a crawler with no keyword data; Wincher is a rank tracker that added a Keyword Explorer.
  • Prices are now on the page. Screaming Frog costs £199 (€245) per user per year with a free 500-URL version; Wincher starts at €49 a month on monthly billing.
  • AI arrived in both. Screaming Frog has OpenAI, Gemini and Ollama integrations and an MCP server; Wincher has AI keyword suggestions and an AI Content Outliner.
  • Removed: an unsourced statistic credited to a "2026 Backlinko report", links to third-party review pages, the "common mistakes" list and claims we could not check on the vendors' own pages.

How Founders Use Screaming Frog, Wincher and Other SEO Tools

FAQ: Screaming Frog vs Wincher

What is the main difference between Screaming Frog and Wincher?

Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a website crawler: it audits your own site for technical problems such as broken links, redirects, missing titles and noindex tags. Wincher is a rank tracker: it checks every day where your pages rank on Google for chosen keywords.

Which should a startup get first?

Screaming Frog, because its free version crawls up to 500 URLs and technical problems can keep pages out of Google. Add Wincher once you have pages ranking on the first three pages of Google and want daily updates.

Is Screaming Frog free?

Yes, up to 500 URLs per crawl, with no sign-up. A licence removes the limit and unlocks saved crawls, JavaScript rendering, scheduling, integrations and AI features; it cost £199 (€245) per user per year when we checked in October 2026.

How much does Wincher cost?

On monthly billing, Basic is €49 a month for 500 keywords, Standard €89 for 1,000 keywords and Professional €319 for 5,000 keywords. Wincher showed euro prices when we checked in October 2026; yearly billing is also offered.

Does Wincher have a free plan?

No public free plan. Wincher offers a 7-day free trial, a 7-day refund on the first purchase and free tools such as the On-Page SEO Checker and SERP Volatility.

Can Screaming Frog track keyword rankings?

No. It crawls websites and does not track Google positions. Use Wincher, another rank tracker or the average positions in Google Search Console.

Can Wincher audit my whole website?

Not the way a crawler does. Wincher's On-Page SEO checker scores single pages against a keyword, but it does not crawl every URL to find broken links, redirects or noindex tags.

Do Screaming Frog and Wincher have AI features?

Yes. Screaming Frog's paid licence connects to OpenAI, Gemini and Ollama and has an MCP server for AI assistants such as Claude. Wincher includes AI keyword suggestions and an AI Content Outliner.

Where can I submit a guest post about my startup?

You can publish a guest post in one of the Fe/male Switch startup blogs, which rank in Google and in AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Get a quality backlink.

Can I use AI to write SEO articles after fixing my site?

Yes. The F/MS AI SEO Tool writes articles from your keywords that are built to rank on Google and in AI assistants, with human editors reviewing them.
