SE Ranking vs Keyword Surfer (2027): Paid All-in-One SEO Platform or Free Keyword Data in Google? Prices, Free Options and When Startups Should Upgrade

SE Ranking vs Keyword Surfer: Paid All-in-One SEO Platform or Free Keyword Data in Google?

SE Ranking and Keyword Surfer both show you search volumes, but they sit at opposite ends of the SEO budget. SE Ranking is a paid all-in-one SEO platform: keyword research, daily rank tracking, a website audit, backlink and competitor research, and tracking of your brand in AI answers, all in one subscription. Keyword Surfer is a free Chrome extension from Surfer that adds search volumes and keyword ideas to Google's own results while you search. The real question for a startup is not which one is better, but how long the free extension is enough and when the platform starts paying for itself. We checked both on their official websites on 1 November 2026: plans and prices as each page shows them by default, free options, data and limits.
Quick answer: start with Keyword Surfer: it is free, needs no Surfer account and gives you volumes and keyword ideas for 70 countries right on Google. Move to SE Ranking when you publish regularly and need to know where you rank, what is broken on your site and what competitors do: Core costs €87.20 a month billed annually, with 2,000 keywords tracked daily, and you can try it free for 14 days without a credit card.

SE Ranking and Keyword Surfer in 2027: What Each One Offers

SE Ranking: one paid subscription for research, tracking, audits and AI visibility

SE Ranking is an SEO platform used by agencies, in-house teams and small businesses. Its keyword research tool gives search volume, keyword difficulty, search intent, CPC and SERP data across 188 locations, with related, long-tail and question suggestions and organic SERP history going back to February 2020. Its rank tracker checks the top 100 results every day on Google, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube, on desktop and mobile, and shows how your site appears in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini. According to SE Ranking's data page, its database holds 5.4 billion keywords and 2.2 billion domain profiles, and each keyword's volume is calculated on its own rather than grouped with close variants.

Keyword Surfer: free keyword data right on Google's results page

Keyword Surfer is a free Chrome extension from Surfer. Once it is installed, you search Google as usual and the extension shows the monthly search volume for your term in a location you choose, a list of related keyword ideas with their volumes and an overlap score, the cost per click, estimated traffic, and how many words and keywords the ranking pages use. Surfer's help centre explains the overlap score as the share of the same pages that rank for both keywords, which tells you whether one article can cover several searches. You tick the keywords you like to save them in Collections and export them as a CSV file. Data is available for 70 countries.

Keyword Surfer: Surfer's free Chrome extension for keyword research
  • Price: free. Surfer's page says "100% free. Forever." and claims 600,000+ users; that is Surfer's own figure.
  • No account needed: the help centre says the extension works without a Surfer account. Only one extra, the Humanizer that rewrites ChatGPT text, needs a paid Surfer plan.
  • Browsers: built for Chrome. Surfer says other Chromium browsers such as Opera, Brave or Arc should work, but it cannot always guarantee compatibility.
  • What it does not do: no rank tracking, no site audit, no backlink data, no keyword difficulty score and no reports. It shows data for the search you are looking at, nothing more.
Who is behind it: Surfer is based in Wrocław, Poland. Its old surferseo.com address now redirects to surfer.ai, and in October 2025 Positive announced it had acquired Surfer. Keyword Surfer is not the same thing as Surfer's paid app: the content editor, AI writing and AI visibility tracking are on the Surfer pricing page, which starts with Discovery at €49 a month billed yearly. If that is what you need, see Surfer SEO vs MarketMuse and our list of free Surfer SEO alternatives.
Best for: founders, writers and small teams who want quick search volumes and content ideas while they search, without paying for a keyword tool.

Free vs Paid: What the Free Extension Covers and Where It Stops

For the first months of a startup's SEO, Keyword Surfer covers the main research job: you see how many people search for a term, which related phrases they use and how long the ranking pages are, all without leaving Google. Add Google Search Console, which is free and shows the queries that already bring you clicks, and you have a workable zero-budget setup.
The free setup stops at four points. First, Keyword Surfer has no difficulty score, so it cannot tell you which keywords a new site can win; SE Ranking shows keyword difficulty and intent for every term. Second, it cannot track rankings over time; SE Ranking tracks 2,000 keywords every day on Core. Third, it does not audit your site or show backlinks. Fourth, it does not show how AI tools such as ChatGPT or AI Overviews mention you, which SE Ranking tracks in 25 prompts a day across five AI engines.
On price, SE Ranking Core costs €87.20 a month on the default annual view, which by our own calculation is €1,046.40 a year, billed upfront. That is worth paying once you publish every week and a ranking drop or a broken page costs you real customers. Before that, SE Ranking's 14-day free trial is a good way to run one full audit and check the difficulty of your Keyword Surfer list.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Comparison

  • Keyword Surfer is free, not "affordable". The 2026 version described it as an affordable part of the Surfer SEO suite for on-page optimisation. The extension costs nothing; the content editor and AI writing belong to Surfer's paid app.
  • No keyword difficulty in Keyword Surfer. The old article said it shows keyword difficulty on the results page. Surfer's own pages list search volume, CPC, estimated traffic, keyword ideas with an overlap score and competitor word counts, not difficulty.
  • SE Ranking now prices in plans called Core and Growth. Core costs €87.20 a month billed annually and includes AI visibility tracking and MCP access for AI assistants.
  • Surfer has a new owner and address. Positive announced the acquisition in October 2025, and surferseo.com now redirects to surfer.ai.
  • Removed: links to third-party review blogs, a local SEO claim we could not confirm on SE Ranking's pages, and generic "common mistakes" and "competitive edge" sections.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • You have no SEO budget yet: Keyword Surfer plus Google Search Console. Both are free.
  • You are choosing topics for your first articles: Keyword Surfer. Volumes and related ideas while you search are all you need.
  • You need to know which keywords you can actually win: SE Ranking, for keyword difficulty and intent.
  • You have published pages and want to see them move: SE Ranking, with 2,000 keywords tracked daily on Core.
  • You care about ChatGPT and AI Overviews: SE Ranking, for AI visibility tracking across five AI engines.
  • You publish every week: both. Find ideas with Keyword Surfer while you browse, then check, track and audit in SE Ranking.

How Founders Use SE Ranking, Keyword Surfer and Other SEO Tools

From free keyword data to a paid platform in 5 steps: search like a customer, save the best ideas, publish one page per intent, watch Search Console, upgrade when you publish weekly
From free keyword data to a paid SEO platform in five steps.
  1. Search the way your customers do. With Keyword Surfer switched on, type the problems your customers describe and note which phrases have real volume. Our guide to finding long-tail keywords shows more ways.
  2. Save the best ideas. Add them to a Collection and export the CSV. Use the overlap score to group phrases one page can cover.
  3. Publish one page per search intent. Answer each group with one clear page instead of many thin ones.
  4. Watch Search Console. It is free and shows which queries already bring clicks. Our roundup of free keyword planner tools lists more free options.
  5. Upgrade when you publish weekly. Start SE Ranking's 14-day trial, check the difficulty of your list, run the audit, then track your target keywords daily. SpyFu vs SE Ranking and Serpstat vs SE Ranking show two other paid routes.
If nobody searches for the problem you solve, that is a signal to validate your startup idea before you build. And keyword research only pays off when you publish: the F/MS AI SEO Tool turns your keywords into articles built to rank on Google and to be cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, with human editors checking the result. To find more places to promote your startup, browse the F/MS Marketing Directories.
