SEO and Keyword Research Tools for Startups (2027): 12 Tools, Prices and Which to Pick

SEO and Keyword Research Tools for Startups in 2027: What Each One Costs and Which to Pick

Every startup that wants customers from Google, and now from ChatGPT and other AI answers, needs two things: a list of keywords people really search for, and a way to see whether its pages rank for them. There are dozens of SEO tools, but small teams keep coming back to the same dozen. This guide covers the two free Google tools and ten paid or freemium tools that startups and small businesses use most, with the entry price we read on each official pricing page, the free option, and the job each tool does best. It is also the hub for our head-to-head comparisons, so when two tools are close, follow the link to the full comparison. If you are weighing a full SEO suite against a clustering and content-brief tool, read our Ahrefs vs Keyword Insights comparison.
Quick answer: start with the free pair, Google Search Console (how your site already performs) and Google Keyword Planner (search volumes from Google Ads). Your first paid tool should be a cheap keyword tool: Ahrefs Starter ($29 a month), Mangools (KWFinder, €37.70 a month on yearly billing) or Keywords Everywhere ($84 a year). When you publish every week and want daily rankings, move to an all-in-one platform such as SE Ranking (Core €87.20 a month, billed yearly) or Semrush (SEO €112.52 a month, billed yearly), or a dedicated tracker such as Wincher (€49 a month) or Rank Tracker (€179 a year for unlimited keywords).

The Two Free Google Tools Every Startup Should Use First

Google Keyword Planner: free search volumes from Google Ads

Google Keyword Planner sits inside Google Ads. It gives monthly search estimates for keywords, new keyword ideas from your own words or a website, top-of-page bid ranges and forecasts of clicks and costs. You need a Google Ads account, and Google says you must complete the account setup by entering billing information to use basic features such as "Get ideas for new keywords".
Know its limits: according to Google's help page on Keyword Planner data, search volumes are rounded, averaged over 12 months by default and shown for exact match only. It has no SEO difficulty score and does not show who ranks. Compare it with paid tools in Keyword Tool vs Keyword Planner, KWFinder vs Keyword Planner and Wincher vs Keyword Planner.

Google Search Console: your real search data, free

Google says Search Console is a free service offered by Google. Its Performance report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position for your site, grouped by query, page, country, device, search appearance and date. It opens on the past three months and you can change the range. This is the only tool here that shows what Google really recorded for your site, so set it up on launch day, even before you buy anything else. It cannot research keywords you do not rank for yet.

The Paid and Freemium SEO Tools Startups Use in 2027

Ahrefs: the cheapest way into a big SEO database

Ahrefs is an all-in-one suite best known for Keywords Explorer and its backlink index. Its pricing page lists Starter at $29 a month (€27 for European visitors), Lite at $129, Standard at $249 and Advanced at $449, and Ahrefs says it never runs discounts. Starter gives 200 credits a month for Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker and renews monthly. If you only need data on your own site, Ahrefs Free (the former Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) gives verified site owners Site Audit and the top 1,000 backlinks and keywords at no cost.
Best for: founders who research competitors and keywords a few times a month. Compare it in Ahrefs vs Semrush, Ahrefs vs Moz and Ahrefs vs KWFinder, or see free Ahrefs alternatives.

Semrush: the full marketing suite, now part of Adobe

Semrush covers keyword research, competitor analysis, position tracking, site audits, ads research and AI search visibility in one place. On its SEO and AI Search pricing page, the default yearly view shows the SEO toolkit at €112.52 a month billed annually (€134 crossed out), with 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily; Starter costs €158.40 and Pro+ €238. A free account gives 10 reports a day, and paid plans come with a 7-day free trial. Semrush's own FAQ says Adobe acquired the company on 28 April 2026, with no immediate changes for customers.
Best for: startups that also run Google Ads or need one tool for the whole team. It is the most expensive entry here. See Semrush vs Similarweb and Semrush vs Majestic.

SE Ranking: daily rank tracking and audits for a small team

SE Ranking is an all-in-one platform with daily rank tracking on Google, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube, website audits, keyword and backlink research and AI visibility tracking. Its pricing page opens on yearly billing: Core costs €87.20 a month (€109.00 crossed out) for 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 250,000 audited pages a month and API and MCP access; Growth costs €188. The 14-day trial needs no credit card and allows 750 tracked keywords a day.
Best for: a startup that publishes every week and wants daily rankings plus audits without Semrush's price. Compare it in Serpstat vs SE Ranking, Moz vs SE Ranking, SE Ranking vs Mangools and SE Ranking vs Keyword Surfer.

Basic tracks 200 keywords weekly. A free account needs no credit card and gives 5 KWFinder lookups every 24 hours.

Moz Pro: Domain Authority and link research

Moz Pro is the suite behind Domain Authority, Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer and the free MozBar browser extension. Its pricing page lists an entry-level plan at $49 a month for individuals managing one website, and Standard at $99 a month or $79 a month paid yearly (300 tracked keywords, 3 sites). A free Moz account gives limited access to MozBar, Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer, and the Medium plan has a 7-day free trial.
Best for: founders who care about link building and domain metrics. See Moz vs Majestic.

Serpstat: a budget all-in-one with daily tracking

Serpstat offers keyword research for Google and Bing, rank tracking with daily updates, site audits and backlink analysis. On its pricing page the default yearly view shows Individual at $50 a month, Team at $100 and Agency at $410. Individual covers 5 projects, 100 searches a day and 10,000 position checks; a 7-day trial asks for a card and a $1 verification charge that is refunded.
Best for: cost-conscious teams that want an all-in-one tool with daily rankings. Compare it in Serpstat vs Wincher and in our new Serpstat vs Rank Tracker.

Wincher: simple daily rank tracking

Wincher is a rank tracker first, with a Keyword Explorer, on-page checker and AI content outliner added on. Its pricing page opens on monthly prices: Basic costs €49 a month for 500 keywords, up to 10 websites and 1 user; Standard €89 and Professional €319. Every plan updates rankings daily. There is no public free plan, but Wincher offers a 7-day free trial and free mini tools.
Best for: startups that already know their keywords and want a clean daily report. See Majestic vs Wincher.

Rank Tracker by SEO PowerSuite: unlimited keywords on your computer

Rank Tracker is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, part of SEO PowerSuite. It tracks unlimited keywords on Google, Bing, Yahoo, YouTube and many regional engines, and it includes keyword research. The free version checks rankings but cannot save projects or schedule tasks. On its own, a Professional licence cost €179 a year when we checked its pricing page in October 2026, and the SEO PowerSuite pricing page lists the four-app suite at €29.10 a month, billed as €349 a year (1-year plan, the default view).
Best for: founders tracking hundreds of keywords on a small budget who do not mind a desktop app. Compare it in AccuRanker vs Rank Tracker.

Keywords Everywhere is a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Edge that shows search volume, CPC and trends next to Google results and on other sites. Ubersuggest: a cheap beginner suite with a lifetime option

Ubersuggest from NP Digital bundles keyword ideas, site audits, rank tracking and backlinks for beginners. Its pricing page compares itself at US$29 to US$99 a month; from Europe the page opens on lifetime plans from €290, one payment with no monthly fees. A free account allows 3 searches a day, and monthly plans have a one-time 7-day trial.
Best for both: bootstrapped founders who want keyword ideas without a big subscription. See Ubersuggest vs Keywords Everywhere.

What Changed Since the Earlier Version of This Guide

  • Prices: the 2026 version said SE Ranking starts at $31.20 a month and Ahrefs at $99. Today SE Ranking Core costs €87.20 a month on yearly billing, and Ahrefs starts at $29 (Starter) or $129 (Lite).
  • Renamed: Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now called Ahrefs Free. Semrush now belongs to Adobe (acquisition completed 28 April 2026, according to Semrush).
  • Removed claims: "real-time" rank tracking (Rank Tracker checks when you run or schedule a check), a voice search claim about Semrush, and an AnswerThePublic recommendation we could not verify on an official page.
  • From two tools to twelve: the old post compared SE Ranking with Rank Tracker. Both are still here, next to the other tools startups use.

Which SEO Tool Should Your Startup Choose?

  • Pre-launch, no budget: Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner, the free Mangools or Ubersuggest account and the free Keywords Everywhere features.
  • First paid tool, under $50 a month: Ahrefs Starter ($29) for competitor research, Mangools Basic (€37.70 on yearly billing) for long-tail keywords, or Keywords Everywhere ($84 a year).
  • Publishing every week, want daily rankings: Wincher Basic (€49 a month) or Rank Tracker (€179 a year for unlimited keywords).
  • Small marketing team, one platform: SE Ranking Core or Serpstat Team for audits, tracking and research together.
  • Also running Google Ads or several markets: Semrush, or Ahrefs Lite and above.
  • Link building first: Moz Pro or Ahrefs.

How Founders Use These Tools

Tools do not rank pages; content does. Start with 20 to 50 keywords that match what you sell, check their volume in Keyword Planner, and write one useful page per topic. After a few weeks, Search Console shows which queries already bring impressions: improve the pages that sit in positions 5 to 15 before you write new ones. Add a paid tracker only when checking positions by hand takes too long.
